David Butler — Artist Statement

In “Whiteland,” I confront the often-ignored realities of whiteness and power within our society. This exhibition presents a series of large-scale portraits, each crafted through AI technology that blends the faces of conservative white figures. These works serve as a visual interrogation of the aesthetics of power, urging viewers to reflect on their own relationship with privilege and identity.

The title “Whiteland” a blend of the construct of “Whiteness” and the cultural term “Gangland” evokes a space where the gang like culture of whiteness shapes cultural narratives, challenging us to consider the implications of living in a landscape still entrenched in racial dynamics. My intention is to create more than dialogue—a moment that forces us to confront our histories and responsibilities within these systems. Then reflect on how we can actively change them

By utilizing AI, I emphasize the role of technology in shaping cultural perceptions while critiquing the structures that uphold white supremacy. Each portrait is not just an image but a mirror to us as viewers, pushing us to engage with the uncomfortable truths of our societal frameworks.

“Whiteland” is more than an exhibition; it is a call to action. As you navigate through these pieces, I want you to feel the stares. I want you to look into eyes that don’t care, engage with the living construct that is not real, but feels so familiar. And I want you to ask yourself. Are you safe? Do you feel supported? And then imagine if you had no choice to leave this space. I want you to feel the way I do every day. And think about why this construct means so much in our American systems of power and privilege.
