Dennison W. Griffith’s most recent body of work may appear as a departure, but it is built on thirty-five years of the artist’s painting and on centuries of art historical precedents. In a color palette that ranges from solemn to joyful, Griffith’s recent series includes intimate works on paper, large encaustic panels, and other paintings that, although new, hold an air of familiarity. They feature what the artist calls “creatures.” Suspended in landscapes via theatrical and surgical apparatuses, these creatures are cellular and bodily, abstract and figurative at once. According to Michael Goodson, director of the Beeler Gallery at the Columbus College of Art and Design, “They are the surprisingly innate symbols of vitality that are still tenderly in need of help and support so that they might participate in the dance that comprises the rest of any given painting.”

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Another World at the Beeler Gallery at CCAD. Organized by Goodson in collaboration with Griffith, the CCAD exhibit is on view January 8 through March 31.
