In Color

On View

April 14 – May 21, 2023

In addition to “In Black & White” is another group show currently on view at Hammond Harkins Galleries: “In Color.” This second group show includes works by nine artists who embrace color as an element of art. Of special note is a spectacular mixed-media wall sculpture by Annie Chrissy Burley that features figures informed by anime, set within a relief-like landscape with abstract elements. There are also early works by Dennison Griffith on public view for the first time and a textile work by Janice Lessman-Moss that can only be truly appreciated in person. Extraordinary examples of contemporary realism by Paul Hamilton include landscapes, the genre he’s most identified with, and a piece of contemporary confection for both the eyes and taste buds. Carol Stewart’s still life evokes abstract painting via its compositional elements and a compressed space. Linda Gall’s figure paintings offer abstract qualities too. She paints gallerygoers to examine how people look at art, but she replaces the gallery context with details of wood grain that are realistic, representational and abstract simultaneously. Melissa Vogley Woods is represented by contemporary abstract painting and a sculpture that is both a work of art and functioning table. There is also an early Aminah Robinson on public view for the first time and an incredible textile work by Andrea Myers to announce the show. Stop in for one exhibit or the other and see both. “In Color” and “In Black & White” are on view through May 21.
