Melissa Vogley Woods is an artist working in bas-relief sculptural painting and sculptural objects using an ancient process called scagliola. “Still Bodies” is a visual exploration of the natural world as a remedy, harbinger, and guide and takes this idea as the stepping-off point for creating this new series. Like previous bodies of work, Vogley Woods pulls from historical references and literature, specifically historic still-life paintings, ancient texts, plant studies, architecture and ruin, and myth. Lucid forms in her parable-like work are interwoven and simultaneously in conflict. The subject is often intermixed with the background or undermined by its own becoming or resolution.
