Winter Selections

On View

January 27 – March 12, 2023

The middle of winter is a great time for surprises like our current exhibition “Winter Selections.” This group show features eleven artists and includes new works on view for the first time. There’s a wide range of works representing AMINAH ROBINSON, including important early works and a stunning monumental figure in honor of the women from the Blackberry Patch, a community that was part of Columbus’ historic Poindexter Village. There are also classic PAUL HAMILTON landscapes, including a Hopperesque country house, a stylish burst of sunflowers, and “Fashion Show,” a charming painting of several bovine beauties. There are contemporary still life paintings that will have you thinking about spring: lovely, intimate florals inspired by light and color by CAROL STEWART and a single floral arrangement by PAM WORKMAN that is alive with patterns. LINDA GALL’s paintings include a rural scene and a gallery interior, both of which are in the artist’s distinctive style and demonstrate a masterful control of the unwieldy medium of watercolor. LAURA ALEXANDER demonstrates a masterful control of another medium: delicate paper. Her intricate, hand-cut paperworks are inspired by both nature and design and the overlap of the two. The works by ANDREA MYERS and ANDREW HENDRIXSON are made of fabric but use the language of painting. Myers combines the horizontal lines of nature with the texture of fabric. Hendrixson, in contrast, uses geometry inspired by quilting traditions to order a rich array of found fabrics. ROSELLE DAVENPORT’s pastels combine nature with geometry and are ruminations on the idea of painting as a window onto the world. Then there are sculptural works by two of Columbus’ most high-profile artists: JAMES MASON, whose sculpture of a female figure evokes his Topiary Garden in downtown Columbus, and MELISSA VOGLEY WOODS, whose sculpture is a work of art with utilitarian aspirations: You can use it as a table. Stop in for this incredible show and check out these works in person.
