Artist Statement
I am a sculptor and mixed media artist working in clays and found objects. I was exposed to ceramics in my early childhood when I made and sold ceramic snakes and other animals; later I pursued undergraduate and graduate work in studio art and specifically in 3D illustration. Over the course of my life I have drawn inspiration from a variety of genres that includes Oaxacan wood carvings, carnivals, and folk art. All of these continue to inspire my work.
I begin a piece by making sketches of the concept. I think about what media I will bring together to create the piece. I explore thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets to acquire interesting artifacts. For my mixed media pieces I assemble diverse objects like wooden spindles and fragments of metal. For other pieces, I sculpt in various clays. After constructing the piece I use a variety of painting and glazing techniques to create elaborate details and interesting textures. Many of my pieces have an illustrative element, as I enjoy telling a story, however it’s most fun when a collector suggests their own narrative.
