Artist Statement

As an oil painter, I am attracted to a variety of subjects - landscapes, figures, still life arrangements, and interior scenes; and a variety of topics - from the beauty of flowers, to the grittiness of the changing urban landscape, to the daily work routine. My starting point for any painting is almost always direct observation. To explain how I try to approach painting, the mission statement from the group called Perceptional Painters, expresses it better than I can. They state: ”Observation, is not an end, but rather a beginning point for an emotional, formal, or imaginative statement of exploration. We believe in the responsive energy that comes from painting directly in front of the motif: the give and take between painter and subject, painter and painting.” - Perceptional Painters I strive to produce work under the guidance of this belief.
